Why Are Seed Oils Detrimental To Human Health?

Seed Oils

For centuries, humans cooked with animal fats like tallow and lard — nutrient-rich, stable fats that supported health and flavor. These traditional fats were staples in kitchens worldwide, providing essential nutrients and a wholesome foundation for meals.

But in the early 20th century, everything changed. During World War I, seed oils like cottonseed oil were developed as industrial lubricants for machinery. After the war, a surplus of these oils piled up, and large corporations saw an opportunity. Instead of discarding them, they heavily processed these oils, stripping them of their original properties, and marketed them as "healthy" cooking oils to the public.

These ultra-processed seed oils — like soybean, corn, and canola — are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, when consumed in excess, can disrupt the body's balance and contribute to inflammation. Unlike animal fats, seed oils are unstable when heated, producing harmful compounds that may impact long-term health. Yet, they became the default in processed foods, including most chips, because they were cheap and had a long shelf life.

At Teddy's Tallow Chips, we're returning to the wisdom of traditional fats. Our chips are fried in beef tallow from Wisconsin and Illinois farms, a stable, nutrient-dense fat that enhances flavor without compromising your health. We believe in snacks that nourish, not harm, and we're here to bring back the joy of real food.

Our co-founder, Katherine, has faced four melanomas, making the fight against cancer a cause that touches her heart in the most profound way. Her journey fuels our commitment to doing more, not just for our customers' health, but for the health of future generations.

That's why a portion of our proceeds proudly supports groundbreaking cancer research through the Greatest Need Fund at the Carbone Cancer Center, University of Wisconsin.
